A modernist composition by Patrick Heron, depicting figures within a room overlooking the St Ives harbour, rendered with bold lines and a maritime palette.
Patrick Heron painted this work during a period of significant development in his career, while he was living in St Ives, Cornwall. The composition reflects his interest in the interplay between interior and exterior spaces, a theme he explored through the motif of the window. By framing the harbour scene through the glass, Heron creates a layered visual experience where the figures inside the room and the boats outside occupy the same flattened pictorial plane.
Heron employs a distinct linear structure, using dark, heavy outlines to define the shapes of the figures, the furniture, and the architectural elements of the window frame. This approach owes a debt to the influence of Georges Braque and Henri Matisse, both of whom Heron admired for their ability to reconcile form with colour. The palette is dominated by deep blues, which suggest the maritime environment of St Ives, contrasted with lighter tones of pink, yellow, and white that define the interior light.
The two figures are integrated into the room, their forms simplified and merged with the surrounding objects. The chair, the table, and the window frame act as geometric anchors, preventing the composition from dissolving into pure abstraction. Heron balances the weight of the dark blue areas with the lighter, more open sections of the canvas, creating a sense of rhythm across the surface. This work captures the specific atmosphere of the Cornish coast, filtered through a modernist lens that prioritises the arrangement of colour and line over realistic representation. It is a precise study of how light and space interact within a domestic setting, demonstrating Heron's ability to transform a familiar view into a complex arrangement of shapes and hues.
