A delicate watercolour depicting the young Giotto as a shepherd, capturing the legendary moment of his discovery by Cimabue.
Gustave Moreau, a central figure in the French Symbolist movement, frequently turned to historical and mythological subjects to explore themes of artistic creation and solitude. In this work, he depicts the Italian Renaissance master Giotto di Bondone as a young shepherd. According to legend, the young Giotto was discovered by the painter Cimabue while drawing his flock upon a rock with a sharp stone. Moreau captures this moment of quiet discovery, positioning the youth in a contemplative state against a rugged, atmospheric backdrop.
The composition balances the intimate focus on the figure with a distant, hazy view of a medieval Italian town. Moreau employs a delicate application of watercolour and gouache, allowing the texture of the paper to contribute to the overall effect. The shepherd is draped in white cloth, which contrasts with the darker, shadowed area beneath the tree where he sits. His posture is one of total absorption, his hand poised as he marks the stone surface. The surrounding environment is rendered with a soft, dreamlike quality, typical of Moreau's approach to historical narrative. Rather than providing a strictly realistic account, he imbues the scene with a sense of mythic origin, framing the act of drawing as a primal, almost sacred activity.
Moreau was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his interest in the lives of artists. This piece reflects his fascination with the origins of genius and the transition from pastoral life to artistic mastery. The muted colour palette, dominated by earthy tones and soft light, creates a sense of temporal distance, inviting the viewer to consider the legendary status of the subject. The work remains a fine example of Moreau's ability to blend historical anecdote with his own imaginative, highly personal aesthetic.
