Description
A woodblock print from the Famous Places in Kyoto series by Utagawa Hiroshige. It depicts figures navigating a heavy snowfall at the entrance to the Gion Shrine.
This woodblock print belongs to the series Famous Places in Kyoto, published by Kawaguchiya Shozo around 1834. It depicts the entrance to the Gion Shrine, known today as the Yasaka Shrine, during a heavy winter storm. The composition is structured around a large blue torii gate and stone lanterns, which are heavily laden with accumulated snow. This series was produced during the height of Hiroshige's career, following the success of his Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido.
Hiroshige captures the atmosphere of a Kyoto winter through a restrained palette and specific graphic techniques. Three women in traditional kimono walk through the shrine grounds, their forms partially obscured by large oil-paper umbrellas. The falling snow is represented by small white circles scattered across the dark grey sky and the blue architectural elements. This method creates a sense of depth and movement within the static medium of the woodblock. The figures are positioned to lead the eye into the scene, suggesting the physical effort of walking through deep drifts.
The artist uses the natural colour of the paper to represent the snow-covered ground, a common technique in ukiyo-e landscapes. The blue of the torii gate and the stone lanterns provides a cool contrast to the warm tones of the women's clothing and the umbrellas. This work is a clear example of Hiroshige's skill in depicting weather and the quietude of the natural world. It avoids the busy commercial scenes often found in earlier ukiyo-e, focusing instead on the seasonal character of a specific location. The use of Prussian blue, a pigment that had recently become more available in Japan, defines the architectural elements and the horizon line.
