A detailed eighteenth-century etching depicting the Tiber, the Ponte Rotto, and the Pons Fabricius in Rome, rendered with precision and historical accuracy.
This etching provides a detailed topographical view of the Tiber in Rome, focusing on the Ponte Rotto and the Pons Fabricius. The work belongs to the tradition of the veduta, a genre popularised during the eighteenth century for travellers on the Grand Tour. The composition captures the architectural state of the riverfront during the mid-eighteenth century, documenting the ruins of the ancient bridge alongside the functional structures of the period.
The foreground features a wooden structure on the riverbank, with figures and horses providing a sense of scale to the scene. The middle ground is dominated by the Tiber Island, with the arches of the Pons Fabricius connecting the island to the city. The etching employs precise line work to define the masonry of the bridges and the textures of the surrounding buildings. The sky is rendered with light, horizontal hatching to suggest atmospheric depth without distracting from the architectural subjects.
Text at the base of the print includes a dedication to Giacomo Isolani, Senator of Bologna, and provides a numbered key to the landmarks depicted. This inclusion of cartographic and historical information was common in prints intended for both aesthetic appreciation and scholarly record. The print reflects the interest in Roman antiquity that defined the period, offering a static, measured view of a city undergoing constant change. The technical execution demonstrates the skill of the engravers in translating the complex geometry of bridge arches and water reflections into a two-dimensional medium. This print serves as a historical document of Roman urban development, preserving the appearance of the river crossing before later nineteenth-century modifications altered the site significantly.
