A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting travellers on the Tokaido road at the Fujieda station.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts a scene from the Fujieda station, one of the stops along the Tokaido road that connected Edo to Kyoto. The composition captures a group of travellers navigating a path, accompanied by a large tree and a stone marker. Hokusai employs a clear, graphic style, using defined outlines and a controlled colour palette to organise the visual space. The figures are rendered with attention to their attire and the burdens they carry, providing a glimpse into the daily life of the Edo period.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Ukiyo-e tradition. The use of flat colour areas and the deliberate placement of elements create a sense of order. The background features stylised clouds and foliage, which balance the more detailed foreground figures. Hokusai avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the narrative clarity of the scene. The stone marker serves as a geographical anchor, identifying the location for the viewer while adding a vertical element to the composition.
As a piece from the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido series, this work reflects the popularity of travel-themed art during the nineteenth century. The print is a fine example of Hokusai's ability to synthesise human activity with the natural environment. The lines are clean and purposeful, typical of the woodblock medium, where each colour block is carefully aligned to produce the final image. This print offers a view into the historical travel culture of Japan, presented through the lens of one of its most recognised artists.
