A 1981 work by Richard Hamilton featuring four photographic self-portraits overlaid with gestural oil paint marks.
Richard Hamilton, a central figure in the development of British Pop Art, produced this work in 1981. The piece consists of four distinct photographic portraits of the artist, each modified through the application of oil paint directly onto the surface. By combining the mechanical reproduction of the camera with the gestural, manual application of paint, Hamilton explores the intersection of mass media and traditional fine art practice.
The portraits capture the artist in various states of focus and lighting. The painted marks, rendered in primary colours, obscure parts of the face, creating a tension between the clarity of the photograph and the abstraction of the brushwork. This technique forces the viewer to reconcile the objective reality of the photographic image with the subjective, expressive intervention of the artist. Hamilton often engaged with the nature of the image, and here he examines the construction of identity through the lens of modern technology.
This work reflects Hamilton's interest in the process of image-making. By layering paint over his own likeness, he disrupts the static nature of the portrait. The result is a commentary on how images are perceived, manipulated, and consumed. The work remains a clear example of his analytical approach to visual culture, where the boundaries between different media are intentionally blurred to question the authenticity of the portrait in an age of mechanical reproduction.
