A refined surimono woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei, depicting four scholars in a quiet, natural setting with integrated calligraphy.
This woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei depicts the Four Hermits of Shozan, a subject rooted in Chinese literary tradition and adopted by Japanese scholars. Gakutei, a student of Hokusai, was a master of the surimono format. These prints were privately commissioned for poetry circles, often featuring high-quality paper and metallic pigments.
The composition shows four elderly figures in scholarly robes, gathered in a quiet, natural setting. The figures are arranged with a focus on their interaction, with one hermit holding a scroll while the others observe. The background is filled with a dense, textured pattern of foliage, which provides a sense of enclosure and stillness. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted blues, purples, and earthy tones to maintain the dignified atmosphere of the scene.
Surimono prints are distinct from commercial ukiyo-e due to their technical refinement. Gakutei uses subtle gradations of colour and careful line work to define the folds of the robes and the expressions of the figures. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper portion of the print integrates the visual image with the literary context of the poetry circle. This work reflects the intellectual pursuits of the Edo period, where the ideal of the reclusive scholar was highly regarded. The print demonstrates the technical precision required for surimono production, where the interaction between the block carver and the printer was essential to achieve the desired effect. The work remains a fine example of the intersection between visual art and literature in nineteenth-century Japan.
