Chen Chun, also known as Daofu, was a prominent figure in the Wu School of painting during the Ming Dynasty. He is recognised for his mastery of the xieyi, or freehand, style of ink wash painting. This approach prioritises the expression of the artist's internal state through fluid brushwork rather than strict adherence to realistic representation.

In this depiction of a flowering lotus, Chen Chun employs a delicate balance of ink and soft colour washes. The composition focuses on the organic forms of the lotus blossoms and their broad, textured leaves. The artist uses varying degrees of ink saturation to suggest the weight and translucency of the petals, while the stems are rendered with quick, rhythmic strokes that convey a sense of movement.
