A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Meynert Jelissen, featuring five sinuous Schweifwerk ornaments interspersed with precise botanical studies.
This engraving by the Dutch artist Meynert Jelissen displays the characteristic aesthetic of the early seventeenth-century Northern Mannerist period. The composition features five distinct Schweifwerk, or auricular, ornaments arranged amongst a variety of botanical studies. These fluid, cartilage-like forms were popular in the Netherlands during this era, often used as design templates for goldsmiths, woodcarvers, and other decorative artisans.
The print functions as a pattern sheet, providing craftsmen with a repertoire of motifs. The Schweifwerk elements are defined by their sinuous, organic curves and symmetrical balance, which contrast with the naturalistic depictions of the surrounding flora. Jelissen includes detailed renderings of carnations, irises, poppies, and lilies, each drawn with precision. The juxtaposition of these rigid, abstract ornamental structures with the soft, organic forms of the flowers creates a visual tension typical of the period's design manuals.
Technically, the work demonstrates the high level of skill required for copperplate engraving. The lines are clean and controlled, allowing for the fine shading that gives the flowers their volume and the ornaments their metallic sheen. The arrangement is not intended to represent a coherent scene, but rather to maximise the utility of the paper surface for the artisan. This approach reflects the practical function of such prints in the seventeenth-century workshop, where they were collected and consulted for inspiration in the creation of luxury objects. The print remains a record of the intersection between the natural world and the highly stylised decorative arts of the Dutch Golden Age.
