A geometric abstraction by Victor Vasarely, featuring a precise arrangement of interlocking shapes in a restrained palette of green, black, and off-white.
Ezinor is a characteristic example of the geometric rigour associated with Victor Vasarely, a figure who helped define the Op Art movement during the mid-twentieth century. The composition relies on a strict grid system, which the artist disrupts through the placement of contrasting shapes. By manipulating the relationship between positive and negative space, Vasarely creates a sense of movement that occurs within the eye of the viewer rather than on the surface of the canvas.
The palette is restrained, utilising a combination of deep forest green, stark black, and a pale, neutral off-white. This limited selection of colours allows the viewer to focus entirely on the interplay of form. The work features a series of interlocking quadrilaterals and curved segments that suggest a three-dimensional volume, despite the flat application of paint. The sharp edges and precise transitions between these areas demonstrate the artist's interest in mathematical precision and the mechanics of human perception.
Vasarely often sought to remove the hand of the artist from his work, preferring a clean, mechanical finish that aligned with his interest in social and industrial design. Ezinor reflects this approach, presenting a balanced arrangement that avoids decorative excess. The work functions as a study in spatial ambiguity, where the viewer is invited to interpret the shifting planes and depths. By stripping away representational imagery, the artist directs attention to the fundamental properties of shape and contrast. This piece remains a clear representation of the systematic methodology that Vasarely applied throughout his career, focusing on the creation of a universal visual language that relies on geometry to engage the observer.
