A detailed 1599 engraving of the Ecce Homo, based on a design by Taddeo Zuccari and published by Balthasar Caymox.
This engraving, dated 1599, depicts the biblical scene of Ecce Homo, where Pontius Pilate presents Christ to the crowd. The composition is based on a design by the Italian artist Taddeo Zuccari, with the engraving executed by Anton Eisenhoit and published by Balthasar Caymox. The work reflects the stylistic conventions of Northern Mannerism, characterised by an emphasis on complex spatial arrangements and highly muscular, elongated figures.
The scene is set within a grand architectural framework featuring classical columns and arches, which provide a sense of depth and scale. Christ is positioned on an elevated balcony, while the foreground is populated by a dense, agitated crowd. The figures exhibit a range of dramatic gestures and contorted poses, typical of the Mannerist approach to human anatomy. The artist employs a dense network of lines to create shading and texture, defining the folds of drapery and the musculature of the figures with precision. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the print, referencing the Book of Isaiah, provides a theological context for the visual narrative.
Balthasar Caymox, active in Augsburg during the late sixteenth century, operated as a publisher and print dealer. His collaboration with Eisenhoit and his use of Zuccari's designs demonstrate the international exchange of artistic ideas during this period. The print serves as a record of the dissemination of Italian Renaissance and Mannerist compositions throughout Northern Europe. The technical execution of the engraving shows the high level of skill required to translate complex painterly designs into the medium of print. This work remains a representative example of the late sixteenth-century print market, where religious subjects were produced for a broad audience of collectors and scholars.
