A striking lithograph by Antoni Tàpies featuring a stark, binary composition of dark, gestural marks and calligraphic lines.
Antoni Tàpies, a central figure in the Spanish Informel movement, produced work that often prioritised the physical presence of materials and the gestural mark. Divisé reflects his characteristic approach to composition, where the surface is treated as a site for exploration rather than a window into a representational space. The work is divided into two distinct zones: a dense, dark field on the left and a lighter, textured ground on the right. This binary structure creates a tension between presence and absence, light and shadow.
The marks within the print are varied in their application. Some appear as soft, atmospheric smudges, while others are sharp, calligraphic lines that suggest a form of personal notation or symbolic language. Tàpies frequently incorporated signs, crosses, and cryptic shapes into his compositions, drawing upon a vocabulary that feels both ancient and immediate. The contrast between the heavy, opaque black ink and the raw, paper-like background emphasises the tactile quality of the print.
By eschewing traditional perspective, Tàpies forces the viewer to engage with the materiality of the image. The composition does not aim to depict a specific subject, but rather to evoke a state of being or a psychological condition. The interplay between the gestural strokes and the stark division of the frame invites a quiet, contemplative observation. This piece is representative of the artist's mature period, where his focus shifted toward the reduction of form and the power of the singular, decisive mark. The print captures the essence of his practice, balancing raw energy with a disciplined, minimalist structure that remains characteristic of his contributions to twentieth-century European art.
