A minimalist pencil drawing by Jean Arp, featuring irregular, organic lines that reflect the artist's interest in chance and abstraction.
Danger of Death is a pencil drawing by Jean Arp, a figure associated with the Dada movement. The work consists of sparse, irregular lines that suggest organic forms without adhering to representational norms. Arp often explored the concept of chance in his creative process, allowing shapes to emerge through a semi-automatic method of drawing. This approach reflects the Dadaist rejection of traditional artistic control and rational composition.
The lines in this piece are thin and deliberate, tracing paths that appear to fold and intersect across the paper. There is no attempt to create depth or perspective. Instead, the composition remains flat, focusing on the relationship between the negative space and the jagged, rhythmic contours. The lack of shading or texture keeps the viewer's attention on the purity of the line itself.
Arp was interested in the biological and the elemental. His work often evokes the appearance of cells, stones, or plant-like structures, yet these forms remain ambiguous. By stripping away narrative or symbolic meaning, Arp invites a direct engagement with the visual rhythm of the drawing. The title, Danger of Death, contrasts with the quiet, understated nature of the pencil marks, suggesting a tension between the mundane act of drawing and the gravity of the subject matter. This work is part of the collection at the Tate, where it is catalogued under the reference T05007. It provides a clear example of Arp's minimalist approach to abstraction during the early twentieth century, where the economy of means serves to clarify the artist's interest in the fundamental properties of form.
