A seminal work of German Romanticism, this painting depicts a crucifix atop a mountain peak, bathed in the light of a setting sun.
Caspar David Friedrich completed this work, known as the Tetschen Altar, in 1808. It represents a departure from traditional religious iconography by placing the crucifix within a natural setting rather than a church interior. The composition features a rocky peak topped with a crucifix, silhouetted against a sky filled with the light of a setting sun. Five rays of light emanate from the horizon, suggesting divine presence or the transition between day and night.
The painting is notable for its symmetrical arrangement and the stark contrast between the dark, solid forms of the fir trees and the luminous, ethereal sky. Friedrich intended the work to function as an altarpiece, yet its subject matter relies on the viewer's personal contemplation of nature as a medium for spiritual experience. The arched top of the canvas mimics the form of traditional ecclesiastical windows, further bridging the gap between the natural world and the sacred space of the chapel.
Friedrich was a central figure in the German Romantic movement. His approach to painting often involved the use of nature to express internal states or metaphysical concepts. In this piece, the stillness of the mountain peak and the verticality of the cross create a sense of quietude. The viewer is invited to observe the scene from a distance, reinforcing the theme of solitude. The work remains a primary example of how Friedrich utilised atmospheric effects and precise detail to evoke a sense of awe. By removing the human figure from the immediate foreground, he allows the viewer to project themselves into the scene, making the encounter with the divine a solitary, individual act.
