A fine art print of Diego Rivera's 1922 mural, Creation, featuring allegorical figures and gold leaf accents in a monumental style.
Creation is the first major mural commission executed by Diego Rivera following his return to Mexico from Europe. Located in the Bolivar Amphitheatre at the National Preparatory School in Mexico City, the work marks a departure from the artist's earlier experiments with Cubism. Instead, it adopts a monumental, allegorical language that draws upon Byzantine and Italian Renaissance traditions.
The composition is organised around a central, semi-nude male figure with arms outstretched, representing the generative force of humanity. Above him, a celestial sphere containing stars and a sunburst dominates the upper arch. Flanking this central axis are groups of figures representing various virtues and human faculties, including music, dance, and the arts. The use of gold leaf and the rigid, frontal positioning of the figures recall the aesthetic of early Christian mosaics, which Rivera studied during his travels in Italy.
While the mural reflects the influence of European religious art, it also incorporates indigenous Mexican elements. The colour palette is warm, dominated by ochre, deep reds, and blues, which contrast with the gold accents. The figures possess a sculptural quality, their forms defined by clear, firm outlines rather than atmospheric shading. This work represents a transition in Rivera's career, as he began to develop the social and political themes that would define his later output. It remains a significant example of the early Mexican Muralist movement, demonstrating the artist's ability to synthesise diverse historical styles into a cohesive, large-scale narrative.
