A refined Ukiyo-e hanging scroll depicting a high-ranking courtesan and her two attendants, showcasing the elegant fashion and artistic style of mid-eighteenth-century Japan.
This hanging scroll depicts a high-ranking courtesan accompanied by two young attendants, a classic subject within the bijin-ga genre of Ukiyo-e art. The composition focuses on the elaborate attire of the figures, which serves as a visual record of mid-eighteenth-century fashion in the pleasure districts of Edo. The central figure, the oiran, wears a heavy kimono adorned with motifs of birds and floral patterns, her stature emphasised by the tall, lacquered geta sandals she wears. Her hair is styled in a formal fashion, secured with decorative pins that signify her status.
The two attendants, or kamuro, are positioned to her side, mirroring the elegance of their superior while wearing slightly less ornate garments. The artist employs a clean, precise line to define the folds of the fabric and the delicate features of the faces. The colour palette is restrained, relying on deep reds, blues, and muted earth tones against the aged silk background. This creates a sense of balance, allowing the viewer to focus on the textures of the textiles and the subtle interaction between the three figures.
Engetsudō, an artist associated with the Kaigetsudō school, is known for these bold, standing portraits of women. The work avoids excessive background detail, ensuring the figures remain the primary focus. The use of space is deliberate, providing a sense of movement as the group appears to walk across the pictorial plane. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the period, where the beauty of the courtesan was inextricably linked to the artistry of her clothing and the grace of her movement. The preservation of the silk allows for an appreciation of the original pigment application, which retains its clarity despite the passage of time.
