A seminal abstract work by Piet Mondrian, featuring a balanced grid of grey and ochre planes that exemplifies the early development of the De Stijl movement.
Piet Mondrian, a Dutch painter and a primary figure in the De Stijl movement, produced this work during a period of transition toward his signature geometric abstraction. By 1918, Mondrian had begun to refine his visual language, moving away from the representational subjects of his earlier career. This piece demonstrates his search for a universal aesthetic order through the use of a grid system.
The composition is defined by a series of intersecting black lines that create a network of rectangular and square planes. Unlike his later works, which often rely on primary colours, this painting employs a more restrained palette of grey, light brown, and ochre tones. These muted colours interact within the rigid framework, creating a sense of balance and rhythm across the surface. The lines do not always extend to the edges of the canvas, suggesting an expansion beyond the physical boundaries of the work.
Mondrian sought to strip art of its subjective elements, aiming instead for a clarity that he believed reflected the underlying structure of reality. The application of paint is deliberate, with the varying densities of the grey and brown blocks providing a subtle texture. This work represents a specific moment in the development of modernism, where the artist moved closer to the absolute reduction of form and colour that would define his later career. It is a study in spatial relationships, where the interaction between the dark grid and the softer, neutral planes creates a sense of equilibrium. The absence of diagonal lines or representational figures forces the viewer to engage directly with the formal properties of the painting, such as proportion, balance, and the tension between the horizontal and vertical axes.
