A 1931 geometric abstraction by Swiss artist Sophie Taeuber-Arp, featuring a precise arrangement of circles, triangles, and intersecting lines.
Sophie Taeuber-Arp was a central figure in the development of European abstraction. Her work, including this 1931 composition, demonstrates a rigorous approach to form and colour. By this period, she had moved away from the chaotic energy of Dada towards a more disciplined, mathematical language. This shift aligns with the principles of Concrete Art, which sought to create objects based on their own inherent logic rather than representing the external world.
The composition relies on a precise arrangement of geometric primitives. A large red triangle dominates the upper section, balanced by a deep blue rectangle on the left. Below these, a series of circles in white, yellow, and green introduce a softer, curved geometry. These shapes are anchored by thin, intersecting black lines that traverse the picture plane, creating a sense of structural tension. The background remains a neutral, off-white tone, allowing the primary and secondary colours to maintain their clarity.
Taeuber-Arp trained in textile design and applied arts, a background that informs the rhythmic, balanced nature of her work. She treated the canvas as a space for construction, where every element occupies a specific, calculated position. Her ability to combine strict geometric order with a sense of visual harmony is evident here. The work avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the relationship between shape, line, and flat colour fields. This approach reflects her belief in the autonomy of art, where the visual elements themselves provide the meaning. Her practice bridged the gap between fine art and design, influencing many later movements in modernism. This print captures the clean, disciplined aesthetic that defined her later career, offering a clear example of the precision inherent in her geometric studies.
