A 1964 work from Jean Dubuffet's Hourloupe cycle, featuring his signature fragmented style and bold, graphic lines.
Comments, created in 1964, belongs to the Hourloupe cycle, a period in Jean Dubuffet's career defined by a specific visual language. This work features a fragmented composition, where the canvas is divided into distinct sections that resemble a collage or a puzzle. The imagery relies on a restricted palette of red, blue, black, and white, which serves to flatten the pictorial space and emphasise the graphic quality of the forms.
Dubuffet employs thick, black outlines to define his figures and shapes. These lines create a sense of movement and tension across the surface. Within the various segments, one observes a mix of solid colour fields, hatched patterns, and organic, amoeba-like forms. The central section depicts two figures facing one another, their simplified, almost primitive features suggesting a dialogue or an exchange. This interaction gives the work its title, as the figures appear engaged in a silent, visual conversation.
The Hourloupe style emerged from Dubuffet's doodles made while he was on the telephone. He translated these spontaneous marks into a more formalised system of interlocking shapes. By removing traditional depth and perspective, the artist forces the viewer to engage with the surface as a flat, decorative field. The result is a chaotic yet controlled arrangement that rejects academic conventions of representation. Dubuffet sought to create art that felt immediate and unburdened by historical baggage, drawing inspiration from the raw expression found in the work of children and those outside the mainstream art establishment. This piece captures the energy of his mid-career experimentation, where he pushed the boundaries of how figures and backgrounds could coexist within a single frame.
