Description
A classic ukiyo-e landscape from Hiroshige's Tokaido series, depicting travellers ascending a snowy slope toward Kameyama Castle under a clear morning sky.
This woodblock print is the forty-seventh station in Utagawa Hiroshige's series, The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido. It depicts the steep ascent to Kameyama Castle on a bright morning following a heavy snowfall. The composition uses a sharp diagonal to divide the frame, creating a sense of physical effort as a procession of travellers climbs the icy slope.
Hiroshige employed the bokashi technique to create the colour gradients in the sky. A pale pink band at the horizon suggests the early morning sun, while a deep blue strip at the top edge provides a cold contrast to the white snow. The trees and rooftops are heavily laden with white, rendered through the natural colour of the paper. Small figures in blue and yellow garments add human scale to the vast winter scene.
The Hoeido edition of the Tokaido series established Hiroshige as a leading landscape artist in Japan. Unlike earlier ukiyo-e prints that focused on actors or beautiful women, this series prioritised the atmosphere of specific locations and the seasonal changes experienced by common travellers. The Kameyama print is often cited for its effective use of negative space and its balanced, geometric arrangement of the hillside and castle walls.
