A detailed etching by George Cruikshank depicting two scenes from the story of Cinderella, originally published in his 1854 Fairy Library series.
This etching by George Cruikshank presents two distinct scenes from the classic fairy tale of Cinderella. The upper panel depicts the protagonist engaged in domestic labour, scrubbing pots and kettles under the watchful eye of her stepmother and stepsisters. The lower panel shows the subsequent scene, where Cinderella assists her sisters with their preparations for the royal ball.
Cruikshank, a prolific illustrator of the nineteenth century, employs his characteristic etching style here. His lines are precise, capturing the texture of the kitchen environment and the elaborate fashion of the period. The composition relies on clear, sequential storytelling, a hallmark of his work for popular literature and fairy tale collections. The figures are rendered with expressive gestures, conveying the social hierarchy and the contrasting experiences of the characters within the household.
This work was produced for 'Cinderella and the Glass Slipper', a volume published in 1854 as part of the 'George Cruikshank's Fairy Library' series. These illustrations demonstrate the artist's ability to condense complex narrative moments into small, readable frames. The attention to detail, from the kitchen utensils to the feathers on the sisters' headpieces, provides a glimpse into the visual culture of the mid-Victorian era. The etching process allows for a high degree of clarity, ensuring that the subtle expressions and domestic details remain legible. This print offers a look at the intersection of traditional folklore and the industrialised printing methods of the time, reflecting the period's fascination with moralising tales and domestic life.
