A wood engraving by Winslow Homer depicting Union soldiers opening supply crates in camp, originally published in Harper's Weekly in 1862.
This wood engraving, published in Harper's Weekly on 4 January 1862, captures a scene of American Civil War soldiers receiving supplies from home. Winslow Homer, who worked as a special correspondent for the publication during the conflict, provides a direct observation of camp life. The composition centres on a wooden crate, which serves as the primary focus for the soldiers gathered around it. The men are depicted in various states of activity, from unpacking goods to consuming food, while the background shows the orderly arrangement of tents and camp equipment.
Homer uses a precise, linear style typical of mid-nineteenth-century periodical illustration. The cross-hatching and varied line weights define the textures of the uniforms, the wooden crate, and the surrounding environment. Unlike later works that might romanticise the war, this image focuses on the mundane reality of the soldiers' experience. The inclusion of the sutler tent in the background provides context for the logistics of the camp. The print functions as a visual report, documenting the connection between the home front and the front line during the festive season. The artist avoids excessive sentimentality, choosing instead to present the scene with a documentary approach that characterises his early career as an illustrator. The work remains a primary source for understanding the material culture of the period, showing the specific items and clothing worn by Union soldiers during the early stages of the war.
