A masterwork of etching and drypoint by Rembrandt van Rijn, depicting Christ preaching to a diverse crowd with exceptional tonal depth.
Rembrandt van Rijn produced this etching, commonly known as The Hundred Guilder Print, during the middle of his career. It represents a synthesis of several biblical passages from the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 19. The composition is divided into two distinct zones. On the left, the sick and the needy approach Christ, who stands centrally as the source of light and authority. On the right, a group of Pharisees and sceptics engage in debate, their postures reflecting doubt and intellectual resistance.
Rembrandt used a combination of etching and drypoint to achieve a range of tonal values. The fine, etched lines define the architectural space and the individual features of the crowd, while the drypoint burr creates the soft, velvety shadows that give the scene its atmospheric quality. The light emanates from the figure of Christ, casting a glow over the surrounding figures and leaving the background in partial obscurity. This manipulation of light and shadow, or chiaroscuro, directs the viewer's eye across the varied reactions of the crowd, from the hopeful expressions of the children to the contemplative stances of the adults.
The work earned its nickname due to the high price it commanded during the artist's lifetime, a sum that was significant for a print in the seventeenth century. It demonstrates the technical mastery Rembrandt possessed in the medium of printmaking, showing his ability to convey complex human emotion and narrative depth within a monochromatic frame. The figures are rendered with a sense of individual character, avoiding generic depictions in favour of specific, observable human traits. This print remains a primary example of Rembrandt's skill in balancing technical precision with narrative clarity.
