A traditional Russian icon depicting Christ in Glory, featuring the symbolic tetramorph and a mandorla, rendered in egg tempera on wood.
This icon depicts Christ in Glory, a traditional subject in Eastern Orthodox iconography. Christ sits upon a throne, his figure framed by a mandorla, which is the almond-shaped aureole signifying divine light. He holds an open book inscribed with Church Slavonic text, representing the Gospel. His right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing.
The composition follows the established conventions of the Russian School. The mandorla is layered with symbolic elements: a red square with concave sides, representing the four corners of the earth, and a blue oval containing celestial figures. These figures include the tetramorph, the four symbolic creatures associated with the Evangelists: the man, the lion, the ox, and the eagle. Their presence reinforces the theological concept of Christ as the ruler of the universe.
The colour palette relies on ochre, deep red, and muted blue tones, typical of the pigments available to icon painters of the period. The gold background, though worn, provides a flat, non-material space that removes the subject from earthly time. The drapery of Christ's garments is rendered with linear highlights, a technique used to suggest form while maintaining the two-dimensional quality required for devotional objects. The faces of the surrounding figures are stylised, with large eyes and simplified features, intended to direct the viewer toward spiritual contemplation rather than naturalistic observation. This work is a fine example of the technical precision and theological rigour maintained by workshops during the sixteenth century in Russia. The preservation of the wood panel and the application of tempera reflect the durability of these traditional methods.
