A detailed Mannerist study by Raffaellino da Reggio depicting the Roman statesman Caius Fabricius Luscinus in the camp of King Pyrrhus.
This drawing by Raffaellino da Reggio depicts the Roman statesman Caius Fabricius Luscinus during his diplomatic mission to the camp of King Pyrrhus of Epirus. The composition focuses on the encounter between the Roman envoy and the Greek monarch, a subject drawn from Plutarch's accounts of the Pyrrhic War. Raffaellino employs a sophisticated use of wash and white heightening on a prepared grey-blue ground, a technique common among late sixteenth-century Italian draughtsmen to create volume and atmospheric depth.
The figures are rendered with the elongated proportions and expressive gestures characteristic of the Mannerist style. Caius Fabricius is shown in a dynamic pose, his arm extended in a gesture of refusal or negotiation, while the presence of elephants in the background serves as a visual reference to the specific historical context of Pyrrhus's military campaigns in Italy. The artist balances the central figures against these large, exotic beasts, using the wash to unify the foreground and background elements.
Raffaellino da Reggio, active primarily in Rome, was known for his ability to integrate complex narrative scenes into decorative programmes. This work demonstrates his technical proficiency in ink and wash, showing a clear understanding of anatomical structure and drapery. The use of white heightening adds a sense of light hitting the forms, giving the drawing a sculptural quality. As a study, it provides insight into the preparatory methods of the period, where artists explored historical themes through rapid yet controlled mark-making. The work remains a fine example of the draughtsmanship that defined the Roman school in the final decades of the sixteenth century, capturing a moment of classical tension through precise line work and tonal variation.
