A detailed study of a wildflower meadow by Gustav Klimt, featuring a dense, flat composition of grasses and blossoms.
Gustav Klimt painted this work during his summer holidays in the Austrian countryside. Unlike his famous gold-leaf portraits, this piece focuses on the observation of nature. The composition is almost entirely filled by a dense carpet of wildflowers, grasses, and small plants. Klimt uses a pointillist-like technique, applying small dabs of paint to represent individual blossoms. This creates a textured surface that draws the eye across the entire canvas without a single point of focus.
The background features a row of trees and rolling hills, rendered with similar attention to surface pattern. The sky is reduced to a narrow strip at the top, emphasising the horizontal spread of the meadow. Klimt avoids traditional perspective, choosing instead to flatten the space. This approach aligns with his interest in decorative arts and the influence of Japanese woodblock prints, which he collected.
The colour palette relies on various shades of green, punctuated by small, bright spots of red, blue, and yellow. These colours represent poppies, cornflowers, and other seasonal flora. The lack of a horizon line or clear atmospheric depth forces the viewer to engage with the painting as a flat, decorative surface. This work demonstrates Klimt's ability to apply his decorative sensibilities to natural subjects, treating the meadow as a textile-like arrangement of colour and form. It remains a clear example of his departure from academic painting, favouring a subjective, modern interpretation of the natural world.
