A woodblock print by Tsukioka Kôgyo depicting a scene from the Noh play Aya no Tsuzumi, capturing the traditional costumes and staging of the performance.
This woodblock print by Tsukioka Kôgyo depicts a scene from the Noh play Aya no Tsuzumi, or The Damask Drum. Kôgyo, a student of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, dedicated much of his career to documenting the traditional Noh theatre. His series, Nogaku Zue, provides a visual record of the costumes, masks, and movements characteristic of the performances during the Meiji period.
The composition features two figures on a sparse, neutral background, which directs attention to the specific details of their attire. On the left, a performer wears a white wig and a patterned kimono, representing a character in a state of agitation or supernatural transformation. To the right, a second figure sits near a small tree, upon which a drum is suspended. The contrast between the fluid, patterned robes and the stillness of the figures captures the measured pace of a Noh performance.
Kôgyo utilised the woodblock medium to achieve subtle colour gradations and clean lines. The print avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the accuracy of the theatrical representation. The artist's background in the Ukiyo-e tradition is evident in the precise outlines and the balanced arrangement of the figures. This work functions as both a historical document of Japanese performance art and a refined example of printmaking from the turn of the twentieth century. The muted background allows the specific colours of the garments, such as the deep blue of the hakama and the reddish-orange of the seated figure's attire, to remain the primary visual interest.
