A refined mezzotint portrait of the celebrated nineteenth-century actress Ann Maria Tree, captured by the skilled engraver Charles Turner.
This mezzotint by Charles Turner depicts the actress and singer Ann Maria Tree (1801-1862). Turner, a prolific engraver, was known for his technical mastery of the mezzotint process, a method that allows for subtle gradations of tone and soft, atmospheric lighting. This portrait captures the subject in the fashion of the early nineteenth century, featuring the high-waisted silhouette and elaborate hair styling typical of the Regency period.
Ann Maria Tree gained fame for her performances at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, most notably as Clari in the opera 'Clari, or the Maid of Milan', which introduced the song 'Home! Sweet Home!'. The print reflects the era's fascination with theatrical celebrity, as performers were frequently immortalised in engravings to satisfy public interest. The composition places the subject in a relaxed pose, with her arm resting on a surface, suggesting a sense of intimacy and grace. The background includes a suggestion of a park or garden, a common device in portraiture of the time to provide a sense of place while keeping the focus on the sitter.
Charles Turner produced a vast body of work, often collaborating with painters such as J.M.W. Turner and Sir Thomas Lawrence. His ability to translate the painterly qualities of oil portraits into the medium of printmaking made him a sought-after engraver. This specific work demonstrates his skill in rendering the textures of fabric and the delicate features of the face through the careful application of the rocker and burnisher. The print serves as a record of the theatrical culture of London during the 1820s, documenting the appearance of a performer who occupied a significant position in the musical life of the city. The soft, monochromatic palette is characteristic of the mezzotint technique, providing a refined aesthetic suitable for the period's domestic interiors.
