A sun-drenched coastal view of the Normandy cliffs near Pourville, rendered with the characteristic light and brushwork of Claude Monet.
Painted in 1882, this work captures the coastal terrain near Pourville, a small village in Normandy where Claude Monet spent several months during the summer. The composition draws the viewer along a sun-drenched path that cuts through tall, golden grasses, leading the eye toward the expansive blue of the English Channel. To the left, the rugged cliffs of the Normandy coast rise against the horizon, their forms softened by the atmospheric conditions Monet sought to record.
Monet employs a characteristic technique of short, broken brushstrokes to render the movement of light across the scene. The palette is dominated by the contrast between the warm, ochre tones of the foreground path and the cool, saturated blues of the sea and sky. White, impasto-heavy clouds drift across the upper register, suggesting a breezy, clear day. The artist avoids rigid outlines, preferring to define the forms through the juxtaposition of colour and tone. This approach allows the viewer to perceive the scene as a fleeting moment of sensory experience rather than a static topographical record.
During his time in Pourville, Monet produced a series of works exploring the changing light on the cliffs and the sea. This particular painting demonstrates his interest in the interplay between the immediate foreground and the distant coastal features. The path acts as a visual anchor, providing a sense of depth that draws the observer into the space. By focusing on the specific qualities of the Normandy light, Monet documents the environment with a directness that defines his mature style. The work remains a clear example of his method of painting en plein air, where the primary objective is the transcription of visual perception onto the canvas.
