A seminal example of Jackson Pollock's drip technique, featuring a dense, layered web of oil, enamel, and aluminium paint.
Alchemy, painted in 1947, represents a transition in the career of Jackson Pollock. It is one of his earliest examples of the drip technique, where the artist moved away from traditional easel painting to place his canvas directly on the floor. This method allowed him to apply paint from all four sides, creating a web of lines that lacks a single point of focus. The composition relies on the physical movement of the artist, who poured, dripped, and flicked liquid paint onto the surface.
The surface of the work contains a mixture of oil, aluminium paint, and enamel. The inclusion of metallic paint adds a reflective quality to the work, catching light differently depending on the viewer's position. Unlike his later, more expansive works, Alchemy retains a sense of density and layered complexity. The paint is applied in varying thicknesses, with some areas showing thin, fluid lines and others featuring thicker, textured deposits.
Pollock's approach to this work rejects the idea of a planned image. Instead, the process of creation is visible in the final result. The tangled lines and splatters document the rhythm and speed of his gestures. By removing the brush from the surface, he eliminated the traditional connection between the hand and the canvas, allowing gravity and the viscosity of the paint to dictate the final form. This work remains a primary example of the shift towards process-oriented art in the mid-twentieth century, where the act of painting itself becomes the subject of the work.
