The final work from Barnett Newman's iconic series, The Stations of the Cross, featuring a minimalist composition of white and raw canvas.
The Fourteenth Station is the final work in Barnett Newman's series, The Stations of the Cross: Lema Sabachthani, produced between 1958 and 1966. This series consists of fifteen large-scale canvases, all executed in a restricted palette of black, white, and raw canvas. The work engages with the concept of the Passion of Christ, specifically the cry of abandonment, yet it avoids figurative representation in favour of pure abstraction.
In this specific composition, Newman employs his signature 'zip' technique, though here it is reduced to a subtle, vertical boundary. The surface is dominated by a field of white, which creates a sense of openness and spatial tension. By stripping away traditional narrative elements, Newman forces the viewer to confront the physical presence of the canvas and the scale of the work itself. The lack of colour serves to focus attention on the texture of the paint and the interaction between the vertical line and the surrounding void.
Newman's approach to this series was influenced by his interest in existential philosophy and the human condition. He sought to create an experience that was immediate and direct, rather than one mediated by symbols or historical iconography. The Fourteenth Station functions as a resolution to the series, offering a quiet, expansive conclusion to the sequence of works that preceded it. The viewer is invited to observe the subtle variations in tone and the deliberate placement of the vertical element, which defines the space without imposing a specific meaning. This print captures the stark, meditative quality of the original painting, providing a clear representation of Newman's minimalist aesthetic and his contribution to mid-twentieth-century American art.
