A classic woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting travellers on the slopes of Mount Yoshino, famous for its cherry blossoms.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts the mountainous region of Yoshino, a location celebrated in Japanese literature for its cherry blossoms. The composition belongs to the series Snow, Moon and Flowers, which explores traditional themes through the lens of seasonal beauty. Hokusai employs a distinct colour palette, using soft pinks to represent the dense clusters of blossoms that obscure the architecture of the mountain shrines. The deep blue of the sky and the roofs provides a contrast to the pale, cloud-like masses of flowers.
In the foreground, travellers and a pack horse navigate the winding path. Their presence provides a sense of scale against the vast, elevated terrain. Hokusai uses clear, controlled lines to define the figures and the structural elements of the torii gate and temple buildings. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the ukiyo-e tradition, where multiple woodblocks were carved to apply individual colours. The use of a gradient, or bokashi, in the sky adds depth to the upper portion of the image, while the lower section remains focused on the activity of the pilgrims and merchants.
This work reflects Hokusai's interest in the relationship between human activity and the natural environment. By placing the travellers on a narrow trail amidst the overwhelming scale of the mountain, the artist captures a moment of transit. The print is a representative example of Hokusai's later career, during which he produced several series of landscape prints that moved beyond the urban subjects common in earlier ukiyo-e. The balance between the organic shapes of the trees and the geometric forms of the buildings creates a structured visual rhythm across the frame.
