An 1813 etching by Johann Adam Klein depicting a Würzburg boatman, showcasing the artist's precise line work and interest in regional character studies.
This etching by Johann Adam Klein, dated 1813, depicts a Würzburg boatman, or 'Schiffmann', standing in a relaxed pose with arms crossed. The figure is rendered with precise, controlled lines that define the texture of his clothing, from the heavy fabric of his waistcoat to the striped pattern of his trousers. His wide-brimmed hat and steady gaze suggest a life spent working on the river, capturing a specific social type common in early 19th-century German genre art.
Klein was a prolific printmaker and painter, known for his keen observation of everyday life and animal studies. His work often focused on the details of regional costumes and the character of the working class. In this piece, the background is kept minimal, featuring only a stone quay and a mooring ring, which directs the viewer's attention entirely to the subject. The etching technique allows for a high degree of clarity, particularly in the cross-hatching used to create shadow and volume within the figure's attire.
This print reflects the Biedermeier interest in realistic, unidealised portrayals of ordinary people. By documenting the appearance of a local boatman, Klein provides a window into the social fabric of the period. The work is signed with the artist's monogram and dated in the lower right corner, while the title is inscribed in the lower left. It is a fine example of the technical proficiency and observational rigour that defined Klein's career as a printmaker in the German-speaking lands during the Napoleonic era.
