A classic Post-Impressionist view of Arles, featuring a field of yellow flowers and a foreground of irises, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888.
Painted in May 1888, this work captures the outskirts of Arles during the artist's productive period in the south of France. Van Gogh utilised a distinct approach to colour and brushwork, separating the composition into horizontal bands. The foreground features a cluster of irises, rendered with quick, rhythmic strokes that suggest movement. Beyond this, a vast field of yellow flowers stretches toward the horizon, creating a strong contrast with the cool blue and violet tones of the irises.
The middle ground contains a line of trees, their trunks and foliage painted with thick, impasto applications of green and grey. In the distance, the town of Arles is visible, with the architectural forms of the buildings and the church tower providing a sense of scale against the expansive sky. The sky itself is a study in texture, with swirling, directional brushwork that conveys the atmosphere of a breezy spring day.
Van Gogh often returned to the subject of irises, finding them a compelling motif for his experiments with colour theory. By placing the cool, dark tones of the flowers against the warm, golden expanse of the field, he achieved a visual balance that draws the eye across the canvas. The work reflects his interest in the natural environment of Provence and his desire to capture the specific light of the region. The application of paint is deliberate, with each stroke contributing to the overall sense of energy and observation. This piece remains a clear example of his mature style, where the physical quality of the paint becomes as important as the subject matter itself, allowing the viewer to engage with the artist's process and his perception of the French countryside.
