A refined Baroque study by François Verdier, depicting Venus resting on clouds beside her chariot, rendered in black chalk with white heightening.
This drawing by François Verdier depicts the goddess Venus resting upon a bank of clouds, positioned beside her ornate, shell-shaped chariot. Verdier, a student of Charles Le Brun, was a prominent figure in the French Academy during the late seventeenth century. His work reflects the academic rigour of the period, prioritising clear anatomical form and balanced composition.
The artist employs black chalk on beige paper, using white heightening to define the contours of the figure and the volume of the clouds. This technique, known as drawing on toned paper, allows for a range of tonal values that suggest light and shadow without the need for colour. The figure of Venus is rendered with a sense of classical grace, her posture relaxed yet poised. The chariot, decorated with shell motifs and floral garlands, serves as a decorative element that frames the goddess.
Verdier was known for his mythological subjects, which often drew inspiration from classical literature and the decorative programmes of the French court. The inclusion of doves, the traditional attributes of Venus, reinforces the identity of the subject. The composition is structured to lead the eye across the scene, from the gentle curve of the clouds to the steady gaze of the goddess. The lines are precise, demonstrating the artist's training in draughtsmanship. This piece provides an example of the preparatory studies that were common in the production of larger paintings or tapestries during the Baroque era. It captures the aesthetic preferences of the time, where mythological themes were frequently utilised to convey beauty and harmony. The work remains a clear representation of the technical skill expected of an artist within the orbit of the Sun King's court.
