A classic Academic portrait by Eugene de Blaas, capturing a young Venetian flower seller with meticulous detail and soft, natural lighting.
Eugene de Blaas, also known as Eugenio de Blaas, was a prominent figure in the Venetian school of painting during the late nineteenth century. His work frequently depicted the daily lives of the Venetian populace, often focusing on the beauty and charm of local women. This piece captures a young flower seller, posed against a weathered stone wall, holding a basket of blossoms. The artist employs a refined technique, characteristic of the Academic tradition, to render the textures of the subject's clothing, from the delicate lace of her bodice to the heavy fabric of her apron.
The composition is balanced, with the figure positioned centrally against a neutral architectural backdrop. De Blaas uses soft, natural light to model the subject's features, creating a gentle expression that engages the viewer. The palette is composed of earthy tones, contrasted by the bright, varied colours of the flowers in the basket and the striking red of the subject's stockings. This focus on local character and costume was a popular subject for European collectors of the period, who sought romanticised depictions of Italian life.
De Blaas was born in Albano, near Rome, but spent the majority of his career in Venice, where he became a professor at the Academy. His training under his father, Karl von Blaas, provided him with a strong foundation in classical composition and figure drawing. This painting reflects his ability to combine technical precision with a narrative quality, presenting a snapshot of a street scene that feels both staged and authentic. The attention to detail in the clothing and the subtle play of light across the stone surface demonstrate his mastery of the oil medium. This print offers a clear view of the artist's brushwork and his approach to capturing the human form within a specific social and geographical context.
