Descripción
A nineteenth-century watercolour study of a rural windmill by British artist David Cox. This work features earthy tones and expressive brushwork typical of the English Romantic tradition.
David Cox was a leading figure of the Birmingham School and a significant contributor to the English watercolour tradition. This study depicts a windmill with a weathered wooden cap and sails, positioned above a brick outbuilding. The composition uses a vertical format to emphasise the height of the structure against a pale sky. Small birds are visible in the mid-ground, adding a sense of movement to the static architecture.
The application of paint is characteristic of Cox's later style. He often used a rough, textured paper known as Scotch paper, which absorbed the pigment in a way that created a mottled effect. In this work, the brickwork is rendered with earthy reds and browns, while the foliage is suggested through broad, damp washes of green and ochre. The sails are sketched with quick, dark lines, indicating the mechanical nature of the mill without excessive detail. The artist avoids precise outlines, preferring to build form through the layering of transparent and semi-opaque washes.
Cox frequently returned to the subject of windmills throughout his career. These structures were common features of the British countryside in the nineteenth century and provided a vertical interest for landscape painters. This particular sketch focuses on the play of light and shadow across the different materials of the building. The lower brick section appears solid and grounded, while the upper wooden portion and sails feel lighter and more exposed to the elements. The foreground is treated with minimal detail, consisting of a few dark strokes to suggest a path or a small stream. This approach directs the eye upward toward the main subject. The overall effect is one of a rapid, direct observation of the rural environment.
