Descripción

A striking abstract work from Yves Klein's Fire Painting series, featuring scorched textures and bold pigment drips.

Yves Klein, a central figure in post-war European art, developed his Fire Paintings during the final years of his career. This work belongs to a series where Klein utilised a gas torch to manipulate the surface of cardboard or paper. By controlling the flame, he scorched the material to create organic, charred patterns that interact with applied pigments. The process involves the physical presence of fire, which acts as both the tool and the medium.

In this specific composition, the scorched surface provides a warm, amber-toned background. Against this, Klein applied his signature International Klein Blue (IKB) pigment, alongside contrasting red tones. The paint appears to drip or flow downwards, suggesting a gravitational pull that contradicts the volatile, upward-reaching nature of the fire used to create the base. The result is a tension between the controlled application of colour and the unpredictable, destructive force of the flame.

Klein viewed these works as a way to capture the traces of fire, which he associated with both purification and transformation. The charred edges of the cardboard and the soot-stained areas provide a tactile quality that distinguishes these pieces from his earlier monochrome paintings. By moving away from traditional brushes and canvases, Klein sought to engage with the elemental forces of nature. This approach reflects his interest in the immaterial and the invisible, as he attempted to record the energy of the flame itself. The work remains a direct record of a performance, where the artist acted as a conductor for the heat and combustion that shaped the final image.

Artist Biography

Yves Klein

Klein patented a colour. International Klein Blue, or IKB, is an ultramarine pigment suspended in a synthetic resin that keeps the colour saturated and matte. He registered it in 1960. The blue is so intense it appears to absorb light. He covered canvases, sponges, plaster casts, and globe sculptures in it. He covered naked women in it and pressed them against canvas (he called them 'Anthropometries' and performed the process in front of an audience while a chamber orchestra played his Monotone-Silence Symphony: twenty minutes of a single sustained chord followed by twenty minutes of silence).

He was born in Nice to artist parents and grew up between France, England, and Spain. He studied judo seriously, earning a fourth-degree black belt in Tokyo, and considered martial arts and art as related disciplines: both requiring control, precision, and the projection of force.

He exhibited an empty gallery in 1958 and called it Le Vide (The Void). Over three thousand people attended the opening. The gallery walls were painted white. There was nothing else. He served blue cocktails at the door. He sold invisible paintings (Zones of Immaterial Pictorial Sensibility) for gold, then threw half the gold into the Seine and burned the receipt.

He died of a heart attack in 1962, at thirty-four. His career lasted roughly eight years. In that time he made the monochromes, the Anthropometries, the fire paintings, the sponge sculptures, the void exhibitions, and enough theoretical writing to fill several volumes. He remains one of the most influential artists of the post-war period, which he would have considered insufficient recognition.
