A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Jean Moncornet depicting two pikemen in period military attire.
This etching, titled Twee piekeniers, depicts two soldiers armed with pikes, rendered with the precise line work characteristic of seventeenth-century printmaking. Jean Moncornet, a French engraver and publisher active in Paris, produced this work as part of a broader interest in military fashion and the formalised postures of the period. The composition presents the figures in profile and three-quarter view, allowing for a clear examination of their attire. The soldier on the left wears a wide-brimmed hat adorned with feathers, a long coat with decorative buttons, and breeches, reflecting the civilian-influenced military dress of the era. The figure on the right is shown in a more functional stance, carrying his pike across his shoulders, wearing a helmet and a reinforced doublet.
The etching technique allows for subtle shading and texture, particularly in the rendering of the fabric folds and the metallic sheen of the weaponry. The background remains minimal, focusing the viewer entirely on the posture and equipment of the men. Such prints were often collected as records of contemporary military life or as reference material for artists and tailors. The work provides a glimpse into the visual culture of the late seventeenth century, where the distinction between military uniform and civilian fashion was often fluid. The clarity of the lines and the balanced arrangement of the two figures demonstrate the technical proficiency of Moncornet, whose output frequently documented the social and military hierarchies of his time. This print is a representative example of the period's fascination with the documentation of human figures in specific professional or social roles, captured through the medium of black and white etching.
