An architectural floor plan by Walter Gropius for the unbuilt Total Theatre project, demonstrating his innovative approach to flexible performance spaces.
This architectural drawing represents the Total Theatre project, a collaboration between the architect Walter Gropius and the theatre director Erwin Piscator. Conceived in the late 1920s, the design aimed to break the traditional separation between the audience and the performance space. The plan illustrates a flexible, circular auditorium that allows for multiple staging configurations, including a central stage and a deep stage, to accommodate the experimental productions favoured by Piscator.
The drawing displays the technical precision characteristic of the Bauhaus school. Gropius uses clean, geometric lines to define the seating arrangements and the mechanical components of the theatre. The layout incorporates a 'spielring', or performance ring, surrounding the central stage, which was intended to facilitate immersive, multi-directional staging. The inclusion of a small perspective sketch in the upper right corner provides a spatial understanding of how the audience would perceive the stage from within the structure.
As a document of modernist architectural theory, this plan reflects the period's interest in functionalism and the integration of technology into the arts. The design was never constructed, yet it remains a significant reference point for twentieth-century theatre architecture. The use of clear labelling and technical notation demonstrates the analytical approach Gropius applied to his work, prioritising utility and spatial efficiency. This print offers a view into the conceptual process of one of the most influential architects of the era, capturing a moment where theatrical performance and architectural form were reimagined as a unified experience.
