An allegorical title page for Jan van Call's topographical series, featuring classical figures and drafting tools, etched in the Dutch Golden Age style.
This etching serves as the title page for the collection titled Admirandorum Quadruplex Spectaculum, a series of topographical views by the Dutch artist Jan van Call (I). The composition follows the conventions of late seventeenth-century printmaking, employing classical allegory to frame the subject matter. At the centre, a stone plinth bears the Latin title, providing a solid foundation for the surrounding figures. A bust of a man, likely a portrait of the artist or a patron, rests atop the plinth, flanked by allegorical figures that represent the arts of drawing and observation.
To the left, a seated figure holds a stylus and drawing tools, while a second figure behind plays a trumpet, perhaps symbolising the proclamation of the artist's work. On the right, a contemplative figure holds a tablet, suggesting the scholarly nature of the topographical documentation contained within the volume. The inclusion of a set square and compass on the ground reinforces the mathematical precision required for architectural and geographical rendering. The background features a subtle, sketch-like suggestion of a natural environment, contrasting with the structured, formal arrangement of the foreground elements.
Petrus Schenk, a prominent publisher in Amsterdam, is credited with the execution and publication of this print, as noted in the lower margin. The work demonstrates the technical proficiency of the period, with fine hatching used to create volume in the drapery and depth in the shadows. This print provides insight into the presentation of topographical works during the Dutch Golden Age, where scientific accuracy was often presented through the lens of classical tradition. It remains a clear example of the collaborative nature of print production in the Netherlands, where artists and publishers worked in tandem to produce high-quality volumes for a discerning public.
