A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro, featuring three celebrated beauties of the Edo period Yoshiwara district in a refined okubi-e portrait style.
Kitagawa Utamaro produced this iconic woodblock print during the Edo period, capturing three celebrated women from the Yoshiwara pleasure district. The composition features Tomimoto Toyohina at the centre, flanked by Naniwaya Kita on the left and Takashima Hisa on the right. These women were real figures of their time, often appearing in contemporary prints as fashion icons and local celebrities.
Utamaro is recognised for his mastery of the 'okubi-e' or large-head portrait style. By focusing on the upper torsos and faces of his subjects, he directs attention to subtle variations in expression and the precise arrangement of hair and kimono. The print employs a delicate colour palette, relying on the natural texture of the paper and the refined application of ink to define the contours of the faces. The figures are arranged in a triangular formation, creating a sense of balance without resorting to rigid symmetry.
The print serves as a record of the aesthetic preferences of the late eighteenth century. The hairstyles, known as 'shimada' variations, and the specific patterns on the garments reflect the trends of the Yoshiwara district. Utamaro avoids excessive ornamentation, allowing the clean lines of the faces and the graceful posture of the subjects to define the visual experience. The inclusion of the fan held by the figure on the right adds a tactile element to the composition, grounding the figures in a recognisable social context. This work remains a primary example of the artist's ability to elevate the portrait genre through technical precision and a keen observation of his contemporaries.
