A refined example of the Cologne School, this fifteenth-century painting depicts the Virgin and Child with delicate detail and symbolic floral motifs.
Stefan Lochner, a leading figure of the Cologne School, produced this work during the mid-fifteenth century. The painting displays the characteristics of the International Gothic style, which favoured soft modelling, elegant silhouettes, and a meticulous approach to decorative surfaces.
The Virgin stands as the central figure, draped in a voluminous red mantle that falls in heavy, structured folds. She holds the Christ Child, who reaches upward towards a crown suspended above her head. The background features a textile-like pattern of stylised oak leaves and scrolling tendrils, rendered with gold leaf to catch the light. This decorative backdrop contrasts with the dark, atmospheric space above, where the crown appears to float.
At the base of the composition, the floor is scattered with individual flowers, including roses, which serve as traditional symbols of the Virgin. Lochner employs a refined technique, using oil glazes to achieve the luminosity of the skin tones and the depth of the fabric. The faces are painted with a delicate, doll-like quality, typical of the period's aesthetic preferences in Northern Europe. The work reflects the devotional practices of the time, where such images were intended to inspire contemplation through their beauty and symbolic clarity. The attention to detail, from the individual petals on the floor to the precise rendering of the crown's jewels, demonstrates the technical proficiency associated with Lochner's workshop in Cologne. This piece remains a representative example of the transition between medieval iconographic traditions and the increasing naturalism of the Northern Renaissance.
