A delicate watercolour illustration by Edmund Dulac, depicting Ariel from Shakespeare's The Tempest amidst flowering jasmine and honeysuckle.
Edmund Dulac produced this illustration for a 1908 edition of William Shakespeare's The Tempest. As a central figure in the early twentieth-century book illustration movement, Dulac utilised a refined watercolour technique to capture the ethereal nature of Ariel. The composition relies on a delicate balance between the negative space of the pale background and the precise, botanical rendering of the jasmine and honeysuckle branches.
Ariel is depicted in a moment of quiet interaction with a bee, suspended amongst the flora. The artist employs a muted palette, favouring soft ochres, pale greens, and subtle blues to evoke a dreamlike atmosphere. His approach to the figure reflects the influence of both Pre-Raphaelite sensibilities and the decorative qualities of Japanese woodblock prints, which were widely collected by artists of his generation. The attention to the structure of the petals and the veins of the leaves demonstrates his background in traditional drawing, while the overall arrangement prioritises a sense of grace and lightness.
Dulac's work for this publication helped define the visual identity of Shakespearean fantasy for contemporary readers. By focusing on the smaller, more intimate details of the play rather than the dramatic spectacle, he invites the viewer to observe the world of the spirit from a close perspective. The print captures the technical precision of his original watercolour, preserving the subtle washes and the fine line work that define his style. This piece remains a representative example of the high standards of production found in the gift books of the Edwardian era, where the synergy between text and image was of primary concern to publishers and illustrators alike.
