A late-period work by Cy Twombly, featuring gestural, floral-inspired forms against a pale blue ground with characteristic handwritten inscriptions.
Cy Twombly produced the series titled The Rose in 2008, towards the end of his career. This work features three distinct, circular forms that suggest the organic structure of a flower, rendered through layered, gestural marks. The application of paint is immediate and raw, with yellow pigments applied over darker, muted tones to create a sense of depth and movement. The vertical drips and scribbled lines beneath the floral shapes reveal the artist's process, prioritising the physical act of painting over precise representation.
Twombly often incorporated text into his compositions, and this piece is no exception. To the right of the floral motifs, faint, handwritten inscriptions appear on the pale blue ground. These marks function as both visual texture and conceptual elements, bridging the gap between drawing and painting. The colour palette is deliberate, contrasting the cool, expansive blue background with the warm, fiery yellows and oranges of the central subjects. The work avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a flat, rhythmic arrangement that draws the viewer's eye across the panel.
Throughout his career, Twombly moved away from the rigid structures of mid-century abstraction, favouring a more lyrical, personal approach. His work frequently references classical themes, literature, and the natural world, though always filtered through his unique, calligraphic style. In The Rose (III), the subject is reduced to its most basic, energetic essence. The repetition of the circular forms creates a sequence that feels both spontaneous and carefully considered. This print captures the texture of the original paint application, allowing the viewer to observe the density of the brushwork and the subtle variations in colour that define Twombly's late-period aesthetic.
