A complex, dreamlike narrative painting by Marc Chagall, depicting the chaos and symbolic imagery of political revolution through a flattened, expressionist lens.
Marc Chagall painted The Revolution in 1937, a period marked by his reflection on the political upheavals that defined his early life in Russia. The composition is chaotic and dreamlike, characteristic of his approach to historical narrative. Rather than a literal depiction of events, Chagall presents a collection of symbolic figures and actions that convey the instability of the era.
In the centre, a man performs a handstand on a table, a motif that suggests a world turned upside down. To the left, a dense crowd of figures brandishes red flags, representing the revolutionary masses. The right side of the canvas features a large, circular form, which acts as a visual anchor amidst the surrounding disorder. A donkey sits quietly near the central figure, a recurring animal in Chagall's work that often represents the suffering or the absurdity of the human condition. The palette is dominated by muted earth tones, punctuated by the stark red of the flags, which draws the eye across the busy scene.
Chagall uses a flattened perspective, allowing him to pack the canvas with numerous vignettes. These include figures in traditional dress, soldiers, and domestic objects, all rendered with his signature fluid brushwork. The painting avoids a singular focus, instead offering a panoramic view of social collapse and transformation. By blending personal memory with historical allegory, Chagall creates a work that feels both intimate and expansive. It is a visual record of the artist's internal response to the external forces that shaped the twentieth century, capturing the confusion and the energy of a society in flux.
