A powerful 1913 lithograph by Max Beckmann, illustrating a scene from Dostoyevsky's The Convicts' Bath with raw, expressive mark-making.
This lithograph by Max Beckmann, created in 1913, serves as an illustration for Fyodor Dostoyevsky's text, The Convicts' Bath. The work captures a scene of confinement, rendered with the heavy, gestural mark-making characteristic of Beckmann's early graphic output. The figures are compressed into a dense, claustrophobic space, their forms emerging from deep shadows through aggressive, dark strokes.
Beckmann employs a stark contrast between the pale, exposed skin of the prisoners and the surrounding darkness. The composition avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a crowded, chaotic arrangement that conveys the psychological weight of the narrative. The figures appear distorted, their limbs and facial features suggested rather than defined, which heightens the sense of unease and physical vulnerability.
This piece was published in the journal Kunst und Künstler, a periodical that documented the artistic climate of early twentieth-century Germany. The lithograph reflects the artist's interest in human suffering and the darker aspects of the human condition, themes that would continue to occupy his work throughout his career. The raw, unrefined quality of the lines demonstrates Beckmann's rejection of academic polish in favour of direct, emotive expression. By focusing on the physical reality of the bathhouse, the artist forces the viewer to confront the stark existence of the subjects. The work remains a significant example of how graphic media allowed artists of the period to engage with literary sources while maintaining a distinct, personal visual language.
