A detailed genre painting by Eugene de Blaas, depicting two young women sharing a private moment over a letter in a Venetian courtyard.
Eugene de Blaas, an Italian painter of the Academic school, produced this work in 1887. The painting depicts two young women in traditional Venetian attire, gathered around a stone wellhead. One woman sits upon the edge of the structure, her arm draped around her companion, while they both focus their attention on a small piece of paper held between them. The title suggests the contents of this letter are of a romantic nature, a common theme in the artist's output during his time in Venice.
De Blaas was known for his technical precision and his ability to capture the textures of fabric, from the heavy wool of the skirts to the delicate lace of the aprons. The composition is balanced, using the architectural form of the well to anchor the figures within the frame. The lighting is soft, suggesting a quiet afternoon in a courtyard, which allows the artist to focus on the expressions of the two subjects. Their smiles and relaxed posture convey a sense of intimacy and shared confidence.
This work is typical of the late nineteenth-century interest in genre scenes that romanticised the daily lives of the working class. De Blaas often painted models from the Venetian streets, placing them in staged, picturesque settings. The attention to detail, such as the copper buckets resting on the stone and the subtle variations in the colour of the women's stockings, demonstrates the artist's commitment to a high degree of finish. The painting remains a clear example of the Academic style, which prioritised technical skill and narrative clarity over the more experimental approaches emerging in Europe at the time.
