A classic illustration by Edmund Dulac depicting the rescue of the prince from the sea, rendered in fluid watercolour tones.
This illustration by Edmund Dulac depicts a scene from Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, The Little Mermaid. It was created for a 1911 edition of the story, published by Hodder and Stoughton. Dulac, a prominent figure in the early twentieth-century British illustration scene, was known for his ability to capture the ethereal and atmospheric qualities of classic narratives.
The composition focuses on the two figures amidst a turbulent sea. The mermaid, adorned with a delicate floral crown, supports the unconscious prince as they are buffeted by the ocean. Dulac employs a palette dominated by deep teals, sea greens, and frothy whites to convey the power of the water. The brushwork is fluid, suggesting the constant motion of the waves while maintaining a sense of stillness in the expressions of the characters. The artist uses light to draw attention to the faces of the figures, creating a contrast against the darker, swirling depths of the surrounding sea.
Dulac's approach to this subject avoids excessive ornamentation, choosing instead to focus on the emotional weight of the rescue. His technique involves layering thin washes of watercolour to build depth and texture, particularly in the rendering of the water's surface. The work reflects the stylistic preferences of the period, where illustrators sought to create immersive visual accompaniments to literary texts. By focusing on the interaction between the two figures, Dulac captures the tension of the moment, providing a visual interpretation that remains faithful to the original narrative. This print offers a view into the technical skill of an illustrator who helped define the aesthetic of early twentieth-century book production.
