A haunting illustration by Edmund Dulac depicting the final scene of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid, rendered in delicate watercolour.
Edmund Dulac produced this illustration for a 1911 edition of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales. The image depicts the final moments of the protagonist as she transforms into sea foam. Dulac employs a muted palette of blues, greys, and soft ochres to convey the transition between the physical form of the mermaid and the surrounding ocean.
The composition is dominated by the vast, textured surface of the water. The figure of the mermaid appears partially submerged, her form beginning to lose its definition against the rhythmic patterns of the waves. Dulac uses delicate brushwork to suggest the dissolution of her gown and hair into the sea. The horizon line is kept low, allowing the expanse of the water to create a sense of isolation and quiet finality.
Dulac was a central figure in the early twentieth-century British illustration scene. His work often combined technical precision with a dreamlike atmosphere. This piece demonstrates his ability to interpret literary narratives through visual metaphor. The treatment of the water reflects his interest in Japanese woodblock prints, which influenced many illustrators of the period. The lack of heavy outlines allows the colours to bleed into one another, mimicking the fluid nature of the subject matter. This print captures the melancholic tone of the original text, focusing on the ethereal nature of the character's departure rather than the dramatic action of the narrative.
